misc. stuff

Have been busy packing. This will be the fifth apartment I’ve lived in since coming to New York in October 2000, which is a little crazy, but I’m v. excited about living with C., the apartment, and just being in a good relationship. (It was a long, long search).

Some various stuff:

  • I have decided the apartment needs a flat-screen TV. I am thinking of this 50-inch plasma by bargain-brand Vizio. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  • Yes it is an extravagance but I’ve had my last TV since 1995 — bought it at Wal-Mart in N.H. Since then I have had like two laptops, three desktop computers, about six cars and numerous other electronic gadgets and gizmos. I’m not going to lose or misplace a TV and I’m pretty sure I’ll still be watching one in 2017.
  • Not that I watch that much TV anyway, but I do like watching sports.
  • Polar RS200sd heart rate monitor

  • And speaking of sports how about those RED SOX. We need to find more playing time for Alex Cora. The man is hitting .415 in 41 at-bats. And top prospect Jacoby Ellsbury last week got promoted to AAA after slugging .644 at Double-A Portland.
  • Lastly I have gotten a Polar RS200sd heart rate/speed & distance monitor. It just arrived today so we’ll see how it goes.

  • If you are willing to go down to a 42 inch, you could get a Panasonic plasma for a little over a thousand bucks. I have one myself.

Panasonic is a great brand, it might be worth it to go for the brand name. But I don’t know about such things because I have a digital projector and I’m never going to back to TV. 50 inches, ha, I laugh at that and the puny men that such equipment would display. Big Pappi will be little nino on that. Try ten feet of HD digital goodness.

    RE the Polar…
It doesn’t look like it’s got a GPS — so how accurate will it be on distance, and how does it know when you change your stride? How does it compare to a GPS like the Forerunner for accuracy? We’ll be wanting reports.

  • Tallman: Our apartment is so sunny, I don’t know that I’d want a digital projector!

Dad: The Polar uses a footpod with an accelerometer to try to gauge speed. (You can see it in the photo – you attach it to your sneaker). It claims 97% accuracy out of the box, and 99% if you calibrate it. I just used it once, this morning, so can’t really tell how accurate it is.

The Forerunner you got me was a great idea — thanks! — but with all the tall buildings around here it would consistently take 10 minutes to pick up a GPS signal. And that was when I lived in N.J. So I traded it in…

Looking forward to reports about the Polar.

Good point about tall buildings and weak GPS systems.

    Vizio VS WinBook 46 inch

PCMag reviewed both — and it looks like the Winbook image is better. There were comments about how great WinBook was and also comments about the artifiact on Vizio. Winbook is a LCD, Vizio is plasma. WinBook may have fewer inputs. Sounds like both use the same remote.

Might be worth a side-by-side comparison. Winbook is only a little cheaper.
