So the apartment is taking shape, sorta. The whole “moving in” thing actually ended up being far more stressful than either of us expected. (I even got a canker sore). Neither of us have ever lived with a S.O. before, and I think part of it is that when you’re dating someone you’re actually supposed to be taking into account their feelings … I mean, in 2002 Tallman and I moved into a place together as roommates and that was not that stressful. But a) then I had my own room and b) you just aren’t expected to be as considerate of a roommate as a girlfriend. (Like just in terms of mutual decisions re: decorating, getting rid of stuff, etc.)

Also, part of it was that for the first week we didn’t have anywhere to SIT. Yeah, that can make it hard to get comfortable in an apartment. No doubt. C. had a nice sofa, but there was no way it was going to make it up the sharp turn in the stairs. And my IKEA chaise was kitty-scratched and not really that nice even when it was new. (I have been trying to transition away from futons in recent years as befitting my age…)

But anyway, we now have seating! In fact, a SECTIONAL. Neither of us thought of sectionals before spotting one at a furniture store in Chelsea. Now we are big fans. They are small enough that you can get ’em up stairs and move ’em around, but they fit together into a nice big piece large enough to stretch out on and seat four people comfortably. (We got ours for $350 on Craigslist).

So it is v. nice to have that to relax on and the stressful period has passed. (I continue to be v. excited about C. and living with her). Also, I had Bexy and Tallman over for drinks as the first houseguests of my own last night.

Also: to celebrate the new apartment, I did order a big plasma TV I’d been thinking of. A Samsung HP-T5054 on Amazon.com. More on this when it arrives.

Lastly, the entire medical establishment continues to frustrate me. I am healthy, but have high cholesterol — probably because of genetics. When I take Crestor, my cholesterol is normal. But why-o-why should I have to wait 90 minutes in a doctor’s office (as I just did this morning) to get a prescription for this stuff?? (Or my Propecia anti-baldness stuff, or the anti-acne Retin A I used to take, for that matter). I understand that stuff like addictive painkillers needs to be under lock and key … but anti-wrinkle cream? Cholesterol-lowering statins? Hair-regrowth stuff? Just put the freakin’ information about how to use them, side effects, etc. on the Internet and let me take charge of my own health.

Rose, I think you would do well to remember Winston Churchill’s advice on having a happy relationship: ‘Let a woman think she’s having her way, and then let her have her way.’

  • I don’t buy that! I know some guys who are in relationships with demanding women like that … and I’m glad I’m not dating them!

Honestly, if that was the price of being in a relationship with someone, I wouldn’t want it. Guys, you can do better, trust me.

I can’t believe it’s a few days in and now you’re realizing it’s tough. Sounds like this was all very rash. I wish you all the best but really ….
also no elevator? This a walkup? You paid for? Stairs that narrow? Derek … wtf? I agree with mofo’s seeming assessment: you’re screwed. Enjoy your big tv cause the rest of the place she is in charge of. And it won’t be long before the main channels you’re watching are We and Oxygen …. maybe Bravo now and then. Buh-bye ESPN!

  • No no no. Moving was stressful, but I’m excited about living with C. — who is a big sports fan. And we are both in good shape and certainly don’t mind walking a few flights of stairs.

  • P.S. jsmits have you seen my girlfriend? she is HOT. I do not think she will want to watch We or the Oxygen channel much but maybe we will work out a compromise where she does so in the nude, or something.

That poor girl … what has she gotten into …

  • “maybe we will work out a compromise where she does so in the nude, or something.”

    You are pretty funny, Derek.

Guys can be pretty demanding, too, in their own way. They just don’t acknowledge it! As you said you have to take into account BOTH people’s feelings.
