Just an addendum to my post about running not making you thin. The other day I saw this photo of D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty in USA Today. And I was like, damn he looks like a serious runner. And in fact he is — recently running a 6:49 pace for an 8K, a marathon as a training run in 4:08 and the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in 1:08:34. Pretty impressive for a 37-year-old.
A few years ago I got to (briefly) interview Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and had the same impression: this guy looks like a runner. And he actually talked about how he’d go running past the WTC before 9/11 in his speech. I don’t know any of his times, but U.S. News has called him a “passionate distance runner,” he’s told Time he generally runs four to six miles, and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) has called him an “impressive runner.” (Chertoff is 54). And by the way, here is Harman, now 62, who in 2005 ran her first marathon (Marine Corps) in 5:23.
