Okay, I admit it — I wasn’t really there for that midnight showing of Sex and the City! And Carrie doesn’t die! I can’t really believe anyone fell for that. How long have we been friends Flygirl???

Anyway, yeah, no plans for seeing the movie. Like I think most guys I found the whole hype about the thing kinda annoying. Maybe I will catch it when it comes out of TBS or something. I did watch a couple episodes with my then-girlfriend in 2003 or so when it was on HBO and couldn’t get into it at all. All of the characters just struck me as pretty unsympathetic, frankly. I mean: Samantha Jones. I’m hardly a prude, but constantly bringing up sex ALL THE TIME, finding some way to work it into every conversation — that is annoying. Miranda is just boring.

And Carrie. Why do so many women identify with Carrie? I know there is this debate over whether she is attractive. I would say yes, but not as attractive as she thinks she is. More importantly, tho — she just strikes me as a little charmless. Ally McBeal was neurotic and a little annoying, but she had a certain charm about her … Carrie? Meh.

(The guys are even worse, totally one-dimensional jerks.)

Even more annoying was the tendency of certain writers to say that criticism of the movie was, in the words of one, “mostly sexist” and linking it to Hillary Clinton etc. Umm, there are many movies featuring strong, independent women that guys enjoy, from “Aliens” and “Resident Evil” to “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Million Dollar Baby.” The women in “Sex in the City” struck me as less “strong and independent” and more as materialistic ring-chasers obsessed with frivolity — err, “fashion.” (Okay, yes, I haven’t seen the movie — but tell me I’m not wrong on this!)

  • What bothered me was when people constantly acted as if the show was popular because women idolized the characters. They are all somewhat unsympathetic at times, and annoying. We watch the show because it’s funny! Hmph.

When you write a story line that features male characters as weak, stupid, and flat as pancakes, by definition the women will appear strong and dynamic– even when they’re really materialistic and unrepresentative of women as a whole. Stupid show, stupid movie. Just because they’re flashy and fun to watch, that doesn’t change the underlying fact.

  • Oooooooh, now I am going to have to eat my words. ARRGGGGH. I am watching the Sex in the City episode about threesomes on TBS and it is actually pretty funny. AWWGGGGG.
