no, i don’t wanna be your friend

So what is with all these people trying to befriend me on Facebook whom I don’t even know? It is slightly annoying. Okay, I’ve done it too, but I’ll at least write a little note saying explaining why I wanna be friends: Hey, I like your writing, we have some stuff in common, a couple mutual friends, etc. Just sending a person you don’t know a random friend request seems just weird to me. Normally when I get one I’ll search my gmail to make sure it’s not someone who I met once and have just forgotten. Then I’ll send them a message saying, basically, hey, sorry I can’t remember how I know you, can you refresh my memory? It’s funny the number of these so-called “friends” who don’t even bother to reply!

Then there are the people who are publicists. I am not one of these snooty journalists who look down their nose at publicists or disdain them. When I worked at the Daily News more than a couple of my stories — decent stories — were driven or inspired by a press release or publicist’s phone call. But in the year and a half I’ve been at the L.U.N.O. (Large Unnamed News Organization) I’ve never been a reporter or an assignment editor. I don’t write stories, and I don’t assign them. All the press releases I’m emailed just sorta sit in my inbox, doing nothing but annoying me. Yet certain publicists seem to want to befriend me so they can pitch me press releases. Awg awg ugh no no no. Please, no.

Are you able to send someone a message when you try to friend them? I didn’t realize you could, until you were already friended.

Anyway, congrats on the draft pick!

  • Yeah there is a little line that says, “add a personal message…” and if you click on that, you can.

Yeah, what is up with this? I just got a “friend request” from some guy I never even talked to in high school. High school was 18 years ago! The guy says “What up?” I don’t believe we ever asked each other “What’s up?” in high school, why would he start now?
