really nice!!
Question: Is it the usual thing to come upon some other hikers and just be like “Hey, can I join you”? Seems odd. But maybe that’s the etiquette.
Hmm. Actually, I had met Tony and Matt — college students from Ohio on a road trip — at a drive-in campground earlier in the week. They were camping next to me and we got to playing cards. We exchanged numbers; I had heard about this hike so later invited them on it. I don’t think Tony knew what he was getting himself in for! It ended up being a pretty hard hike, somewhere around 16 or 20 miles with lots of elevation changes. So it was a struggle but we made it down okay after like 10 hours of hiking.
I did meet this French guy on the trail the day of the Mt. Sheridan hike and we hiked down the mountain together. And once on a hike in NH I picked up a girl from Mass. I was pretty infatuated with for a time (until she dumped me).
But I don’t think I’d ever ask, “hey, can I hike with you” — that’d be awkward for them if they wanted to be alone. But if you see someone on the trail for a second time, after talking to them the first, it might be natural to start walking together.
