Some random musings before I leave for Nelson…
In 1996 this cookie factory outside of Christchurch won the record for baking the world’s biggest cookie! Twenty-five yards in diameter. The woman at the cookie-counter told me that there’s a bit of a cookie-controversy over whether Cookie Time still holds the record. In 2003, this North Carolina company created a concoction 100 feet in diameter, and Cookie Time relinquished their title. But apparently there’s some sentiment that what the folks in North Carolina baked was actually a brownie — raising the vexing philosophical issue, are brownies really cookies??
The folks at Guinness apparently don’t think so, or perhaps they’re just taking their time verifying the record.
Also – like many Commonweath countries, New Zealand is a nation of tea-drinkers. But a number of coffee shops have sprung up in the past decade — yes, including some very nice Starbucks, (as well as the Dunedin shop shown above). But the thing is, you can’t order COFFEE at these coffeehouses. You can get lattes and expressos and “long blacks”, “short blacks” and something whites — but you literally cannot order a plain old cup o’ Joe. Even in Starbucks.
Also, I’ve uploaded some other photos from my Dunedin trip onto Flickr, and you can find them here. But I’m not sure how interesting people who don’t know me will find them.

you can order a cup of joe… i presume you mean drip coffee… at starbucks and at many places. you didnt look closely enough
there is plenty of drip coffee in nz
but… here’s what’s diff from the us… nz was introduced to espresso and great beans before the starbucks explosion that started in seattle in the 70’s. apparently wellington has been a coffee town for longer than seattle… even though nz is a younger country. interesting.
and most of the coffeeshops in nz make a better cup of coffee starbucks. that is definitely not true in the us… and ‘bucks puts the small guys out of biz in the us all too often. that doesn happen here in nz.
