not so hot

Well, last night lacked the stifling humidity of previous days, so I decided to go for it in the Nike race …

Big mistake, of course. I am such a jackrabbit at times! I’ve probably run 100 races or so, you’d think I’d know how to pace myself. Hold back for the first half, wait to go for it in the second. Negative splits and all that. But whenever I haven’t raced for awhile — this was my first middle-distance run since May 8 — I tend to get overexcited and go for it, despite my heart-rate monitor.

So…

Mile 1: 6:23, 181 avg. HR
Mile 2: 6:57, 190
Mile 3: 6:48, 193
Mile 4: 7:27, 194
Mile 5: 7:38, 194

That’s a 35:15 time, 7:03 pace, HR 191 avg/197 max, 277th out of 7551 runners.

Obviously, I really, really died in the last two miles. I’m surprised my last split wasn’t even worse, since for the past 400 yards I had a bad side cramp and really slowed down. After I finished and started cooling down, I realized that yeah, it was actually rather hot… it had just felt cool compared to the last few days. (According to the official race statistics, it was 88 deg. with 48% humidity…)

Oh well. Lesson learned, again, and all that. In any case, afterwards Joan Jett performed in the park — and she rocked!

It was HOT! I ran the race as well and got stuck in the back…took me 3 1/2 minutes to get to the start line:( I ended up behind a load of walkers so my first mile was 9 1/2 minutes?!!! I ended up running 41:04 which isn’t too bad considering the first mile. Didn’t really race this one because Sunday I’m looking to run a FAST 10K in Cape Cod (flat!!).
