20.2

Did 20.2 miles with the Running Center in Central Park this morning … 2:53:14, or a 8:34 pace. It was an organized training run, not a race, but I was a happy that I led throughout. (There were about 50 or so runners). Is that a braggy thing to say? Well, maybe. There are so many great runners in this city who normally keep me very humble … but it was nice to get a reminder that while there’s a lot of room for improvement, I am actually a pretty decent runner.

  • i would say that is damn fast in my book … and a long damn way. brag on!

  • Derek, you’ve ALWAYS been a very fast runner! From my point of view, you’re one of those guys who are perpetually a dot in my farthest vision, one of those guys who – if I want to predict their times – I simply take my time and cut it in half. That’s you.

  • thanks … although I definitely haven’t “always” been particularly fast (not that I consider myself “fast” now, but I guess it’s all relative). I was actually pretty unathletic in high school (theater geek), until my senior year when I decided to do something about that and joined the track team.

In college I was actually on the x-c team with Chelle, but quit after a month … then was kinda on-again, off-again with my running until about ’98. (I’ve been “on” since then, more or less). I remember my first 5K when I got back into it … 26:18. No disrespect meant to the people who run 30-minute 5Ks … but I don’t think anyone could consider that time fast — not by a 26-year-old guy in good health.
