A Korean War veteran credited with saving the lives of 40 soldiers will receive the nation’s highest military honor today, 55 years after bigotry denied him the chance.
President Bush will drape the Medal of Honor on Holocaust survivor Cpl. Tibor (Ted) Rubin, 76, at a White House ceremony this afternoon.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Rubin, of Garden Grove, Calif., said in a phone interview yesterday. “I’m a lucky man.”
The Hungarian immigrant was nominated for the medal decades ago, his supporters say, but a prejudiced sergeant refused to file papers honoring a Jew.
