goodbye to all that

Finished up my NYC Marathon training yesterday by running the FlyersFall Foliage Run around the New Croton Reservoir. Very pretty and scenic … saw a couple deer on the course. I did 20 miles, not fast. It was raining heavy when we left Saturday morning, and I was really dreading getting drenched, but it had mostly tapered off by the time we got to Croton.

I’m thinking now that I’m back in Manhattan, I should join one of the big running groups, and the Flyers are under serious consideration. They organized this run real well, with water stops every few miles. I haven’t belonged to a team since 2001, when I was living in Astoria and ran for Hellgate — which was a ton of fun — but nowadays my work schedule precludes me from attending most teams’ workouts, which are generally around 6:30 or 7 p.m. Still, as this run shows, the running groups other things to offer.

Here’s a photo of me completing the Staten Island half-marathon:

I’ve finally agreed with my critics who say my other running shorts are, in fact, too short…

Finally: looking back on my training for nyc this year … the getting up before dawn, the runs in the rain, the speedwork on the treadmill … I just have three words to say: BRING IT ON.

  • you knew i was gonna have to comment on this one, right? 😀

of course i’d recommend joining the flyers…then again i am biased 😉 let me know if you have any questions about them…

but yes, tim does a kick-ass job with those out of town long runs. i haven’t had a chance to actually run any of them yet, but i did volunteer at one of them last year and was very impressed with how well everything was organized.

    happy tapering!!

  • personally, I think you should join the Cystic Fibrosis Running Team, but we don’t have much to offer a high-ability runner like yourself; I guess you could use the team workouts the Flyers have to offer.

I think this marathon is going to be yours on a white china plate. I truly think this will be your Boston qualifier.

  • I’d actually argue that if your shorts were any longer they’d be too long. But what do I know. I think they’re a good length right now! As for NYC clubs, I have no opinion — but joining one sounds like a great plan.

  • well those red shorts are a good length, maybe a little long for my liking. But looking at these photos from Grete’s, those shorts do look kinda short.

It was partly because I was wearing a long shirt, but still. Shorts season is nearly over anyway, but I think I’ll try to pick up some new ones at the marathon expo.

The other group I was thinking of was Greater New York, just ’cause Chelle and another female friend are members. But I’m not sure if they have some kind of speed requirements or something. So we’ll see.

P.S. – Y’know, I knew the name Tim Decker was familiar — he’s a fellow Vassar runner! Was three years ahead of me. Funny.
