damon to yankees

Awg. Awg. Awg.

damon

Overheard on Sox Therapy: “I wish instead of this deal, Brian Cashman would have driven to my home, knocked on my door, and kicked me in the nuts.” (although actually, this was written by a Yankee fan who hates the deal … Go figure.)

That is totally crazy. But it certainly solves the Yanks centerfield problem.

  • Let me be clear that while I do believe Larry Lucchino is running the show over at Fenway Park, deals like this are why I don’t actually think he *should* be running the show. Christ, these guys apparently didn’t even *know* Damon was talking to the Yankees until the deal was done and reporters called them for comment.

Although, I’m not so sure that Damon is worth $13 million annually for four years, myself. At that price, I might well let the Yankees have him.

Damon proved one thing, all he cares for is the money. He says he’ll miss the Boston fans. If he really cared about them, he wouldn’t have signed with the Yankees, if he really cared about the Boston fans, he would have made more of an effort to stay. I hope he has a terrible season in New York

  • I don’t ever blame pro athletes for taking the money. Would you really give up $12 million for “the fans”? New Yorkers will love him too.

Mofo, Damon’s contract is basically the same as Matsui’s. Who would you rather have?

    2005 stats
    Matsui .305 BA, .367 OBP, .496 SLG, 23HR 2SB
    Damon .316 BA, .366 OBP, .439 SLG, 10HR 18SB

    Hmm.

Damon is 32, seven months older than Matsui.

Of course you would rather have matsui. The HR difference is too great. And a few SBs don’t even come close to making up for it. Great Damon goes from first to second a few times a season. While Matsui is scoring with HRs and bringing all the other guys home with him. I think the Yanks overpaid for the talent, but it may well be worth it because they took away a player from Boston. It’s definitely worth a few million a year to have Damon not playing for the Red Sox.

That said, if I were a Yankee, I wouldn’t go play for the Red Sox because of the rivalry. I’d hate to let all those fans down.

  • I agree, the Yankees dealt a blow to the Sox here. How the hell do we replace him? Keep in mind that Damon plays a tougher position than Matsui, which must be worth something. They’re both OK outfielders with weak arms, though. Damon was playing hurt the second half of the season, it seemed like the first half no one could get him out.

  • First, I’d rather take Matsui, yes– the difference between .305 and .315 is far less than the difference between 23HRs and 10HRs. My concern with Damon all along was the length of the contract. Originally he was talking about a seven-year deal, and I’d have Lucchino shot if he agreed to something like that with a player who’s 32. I’d have given a four-year deal at $46 or $48 million, maybe, but I’d rather go with three years at $37 to $40 million. The important thing is to keep the older players on small contracts and free up the cash for the young guys and farm prospects.

  • I think alot of Yankee fans are going to hate this deal. This is a guy who swore he would NEVER play with New York…..go figure. I don’t blame him for taking the money and running. It’s the nature of the game. I personally think the Yanks got screwed giving him 13M a yr for 4 years….come on…..he’s a veteran with a bad shoulder and there is no doubt in my mind that he’s going to have trouble working yankee stadium CF. The only thing he’ll do different next year is increase his stolen bases numbers – with Jeter and A-Rod behind him in the batting order, he’s going to jump on that.
Andruw Jones is a free agent next year…….

It’s a bigger center field to deal with, which will hurt him if he can’t throw. But it will also allow him more room to use his speed to chase stuff down. Of course, how much speed will he have in three years at 35? I suspect he is going to be a burden on the team during that fourth and maybe third year of his contract. But he should help now, which was the Yanks are all about.

  • RunningRedSoxFan, I love it when you talk dirty like that…
