It’ll probably be official in a few hours. Not a moment too soon, really. I was realizing yesterday how the strike was really hurting peeps on the lower economic rungs and sorta regretted my joke-y post earlier. It was like, this was for a little bit, now I’m ready for it to be over.
P.S. the bad thing is, though, that this kills my story from yesterday that was being held ’til Friday. It was sorta fun, I’ll tell y’all about it in a little bit.
I do have some sympathy with the strikers. Yesterday in the WSJ, for example, an opinion piece scortched the unionized workers for earning salaries of $40,000 for subway cleaners and $54,000 for carmen– with the implication that those salaries are a lot of money. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in New York City, they aren’t.
They are decent enough to *get by*, I think, but only if everything else in a person’s life is addressed– prinicipally healthcare and retirement savings. So I’m not at all surprised the union is raising hell over those issues. I mean, healthcare for a family of two 40-ish adults and two children can easily run $1,500 a month. I’d fight like hell over that rather than some 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment.
