Monday musings Assorted thoughts:
- Did 14 miles in the park on Saturday. Did the double-loop in 1:40, 10 minutes faster than my time from two weeks ago.
- Running the loop today, I saw some elderly Chinese guy walking his cat on a leash near Central Park North. The grey cat looked awfully regal.
- I had a story Saturday about Merryl David, a 34-year-old black woman U-2 pilot who grew up in the Bronx, the daughter of a postal worker. Today I was talking to 9/11 families who were watching the New York video feed of the Zacarias Moussaoui sentencing.
- As a kid I tended to have a lot more girl friends than boy friends. (I remember one birthday party when I was seven or eight where it was about 10 girls and two boys, including me). These days I have several close guy friends … but I still got invited to five Oscar parties, and no Super Bowl parties! I made it to Sarah Hackerman‘s party, briefly, before attending H.’s.
- Speaking of my childhood, here’s an old photo of me (above). My brother Adam is the one in front … the rest are “cousins.” (Well, not real cousins, but that’s how we thought of them).
- On Thursday my friend and sometimes running partner Tanya (an enterprising small business co-owner) will be guest-bartending Thursday at Speak, 28 E 23rd St. in a benefit for Audacity Magazine, a magazine for people with disabilities. Half-price booze from 8 to 10 p.m. — I’ll be there. RSVP to rsvp at blinkads dot com.

Entertaining and interesting article about pilot Merryl David. It’s also nice to see someone knows aviation well enough to write about it. (Crosswinds, even; very impressive!) My father, a flight instructor, used to get so incensed at reporters who didn’t know that stalling didn’t involve the plane’s engines but, rather, the air going over the wings.
Having reached my life’s goal of getting my pilot’s license only recently, I now know what’s involved in that feat personally. And it is, bar none, one of the most incredible experiences in this world. Thanks for a good read, Derek!
Hackerman?
[…] So a few months ago I posted this photo of six kids in a wagon … […]
