ego and hubrisSo my longtime readers may remember that a year ago this month, I had to write a story about bloggers dating. I blogged about said story here and here. It is time to offer congratulations to two of the men featured in said article … I will be able to say, I knew them when.

First, Jason Mulrew. I wasn’t aware of him or his blog when I started this story, but was put in touch with him. The name of his blog is “Everything is Wrong With Me” and the tagline is, “26, bipolar and hungry.” I spoke to him by phone, but as I recall at the time he didn’t have any great stories of dating girls he’d met from his blog, so I didn’t quote him in the story. However I felt bad about wasting his time, so I included him in this four-person list I compiled about of some of New York’s “most eligible” bloggers. Here’s what I wrote about Jason:

“Everything is Wrong With Me,” boasts this 25-year-old upper East Side humorist. Perhaps someday he’ll find someone who’ll appreciate his hungover posts about women’s body parts — or not.

This was basically my attempt to write in a snarky, Gawker-esque voice.

Well, on Monday I received a very nice email from Jason. That little line led to him being included last June in People magazine’s 50 most eligible bachelors.

And that mention in People led to a book deal with DK Publishing, announced last week, as well as a TV deal to develop a script for Dreamworks. Wow!

Jason’s blog was already growing through word of mouth, but I was the first to give him any press, and he very genorously credited me with being “partly responsible” for his success. (Also promised to take me to the Playboy Mansion if he ever gets a two-person invite!) That was a very nice gesture, so thank you and congratulations, Jason.

Also there is Michael Malice, another blogger featured as a one of New York’s “most eligible.” I said this about him.

Has a biography coming next year, as well as a book deal for his humorous Web site OverHeardinNewYork.com. But not all women would appreciate Malice’s dark sense of humor.

That mention of him made the back cover of his Overheard book. Also the comic-book biography of him, by Harvey Pekar of “American Splendor” fame, was released yesterday. I had hoped to make his book-signing party at the Union Square Barnes & Noble but was waylaid. However I am very curious to read this book. Brian Doherty says Malice comes across as “self-consciously evil.”

So congratulations, Jason and Michael. I think the moral of this story is, if you’re interested in fame and fortune, don’t be like everybody else.
