random thoughts on the passing scene
- The Red Sox are off to an 11-5 start, the best record in the American League. But what are we going to do about Wily Mo Pena? His defense is killing us, and he’s only hitting .269 with one homer. I know he has “potential,” but how do we justify giving him the playing time to realize that potential if he kills us on defense? And for that matter, what do we do for a fifth starter, because it t sounds like David Wells is done. Branson Arroyo, meanwhile, is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA over three games with the Reds. And as a pitcher he’s hitting 2-for-6, those two being home runs.
- But I guess making bad trades is a natural of being an aggressive general manager, which is overall a good thing.
- TheMofo has been a little quiet lately, but I’m sure you all remember him. He is coming into town for the weekend (from Boston) and I am throwing a party in his honor at Perdition tonight. To get the story behind the story you’ll have to attend, unless he wants to reveal it in the comments. Seriously, everyone here is welcome. I’ll be there from 9 p.m. on.
- This summer is my mom’s 60th birthday, and to celebrate my brother and I have joined forces and are bringing her here from New Zealand for a few weeks. This will be her first time in the States since the late ’80s, I believe. More on this later.
- Probably not the best pitch I’ve ever received, but certainly among the more amusing: “Hi Derek, I am an Australian living in NYC, I read the Post most days and enjoy your articles…” (For those who don’t know, I work for the Post’s bitter rival).
