biking and sidewalks

scaffoldingSo I have really been loving biking in the city. My best friend lives in Chelsea, I work in Chelsea, it’s all very convenient by bike to Hell’s Kitchen. However I learned the hard way yesterday that you should be very very careful when biking on the sidewalk. Was coming north on 10th (toward the direction of the photographer in this shot) when I completely didn’t see the green cross-beam pictured here. It hit me right in the arms, the underside of my elbows, which are still pretty sore. Ouch.

  • …not to mention, of course, it’s illegal, dangerous to pedestrians, yadda yadda yadda….

  • Biking on the sidewalk? Please tell me you’re not one of those… I know it’s no easy feat to navigate the streets by bike, but the sidewalk isn’t really the alternative. You’re lucky you hit a crossbeam, and not a person.

  • On 10th Ave. in the high 30s-low 40s, there are really no (or almost no) pedestrians. Seriously, you might see one every few blocks or so. And the streets are often so packed with cars trying to get into the Lincoln Tunnel that it’s almost impossible to bike on the street. It is like wall-to-wall cars.
