So did my first race in awhile, the four-mile Run for Central Park on Saturday in … umm … just under 30 minutes. Yeah. Alright, it was 73 degrees and 94% humidity, not exactly ideal running conditions. And I think I do particularly badly in the heat. I really have not been running well at all. Also, the scale says I’m up to 178.5 pounds. This isn’t terrible, as I’m nearly 6″ tall, but I was down to 168.5 earlier in the year. (In the winter of ’04-’05 I weighed as much as 185.) So diet it is.

And to motivate myself I think I will be giving up alcohol until I am down to 170. You read it here first, folks…

Um, not sure if I’m alone in this, but don’t women prefer more substantial men? 178 sounds good. Then again, perhaps I have strange predilections.

How will less alcohol consumption lead to lower weight?

  • giving up alcohol? I will miss your bar reviews.

  • Doesn’t beer have lots of carbs and calories? I’m sure there is some reason they call it a beer belly. In any case the cutting off alcohol is more to motivate me than anything else.

Also I have been drinking a lot since moving to Manhattan — not like super-heavily, but v. frequently. So a break would probably do me good.

And Kate I will still be doing my bench presses and bicep curls at Gold’s. I do not expect to waste away to nothing.

So just switch to hard alcohol. No carbs there.

  • I expect this to be like a two-week break. Losing eight pounds should not be hard.

You have been going out pretty hard or at least very consistently. Probably not a bad idea to give your body a break.

  • Wow — very ambitious. Not sure I could do that . . .

damnit! i hate when men say losing 8 pounds will be easy. it’s never that easy for a chick. i’d give up chocolate for a week if i could lose 8 pounds. lol anyway…hello Derek! your blog provides plenty of entertainment during the down time at this other unnamed place of bidness. and i’ve always liked a man with substance – as long as the weight is muscle! and opened-toed shoes are acceptable w/o socks of course and w/nice toes. but does this mean you get pedicures now?? be well. ciao, Ike (for short).

  • I must admit I spent a lot of time admiring my biceps in the mirror at the gym the other day. The curl techniques my friend Andrew G. taught me have I think been quite effective. Not that I have a weightlifters physique by any means but it is a huge improvement from my college days.

… uh … vanity thy name is rose.

  • Guilty as charged on that one, I’m afraid. But bear in mind, I was a guy who … well, I was never fat, but wasn’t exactly athletic. I do remember being the last one picked on a team or two.

This is funny. I’m just reading this now, as it’s been busy. My brother Eric used to flex his biceps (sp?) in the mirror when we were kids. I remember one night when the children shared one hotel room while on vacation (lots of brothers and me) and he stood in front of the mirror admiring them. But he was a teenager 🙂 After a while aren’t those things supposed to take a backseat to personality? Fun? Common values? Other stuff? My younger brother just broke up with a girl who is very attractive but had the personality of a post. I know that’s mean, but I’m quoting. She wanted to have sex all the time or sleep/ mope and he wanted to clean her apartment and get her to go out and do things.
