lansdowne road

ice stripSo the latest pub innovation is a strip of ice running along the length of the bar. I first saw this at Vlada bar and thought it was purely decorative. But of course, it is not. You put your drink on the ice and it keeps it cold for you. Neat.

I encountered this at Lansdowne Road, another new Hell’s Kitchen bar, this one at W. 43rd St. and 10th Ave. At first I saw the sign and thought this was a Red Sox bar! But no, it turns out that Lansdowne Road is the name of a famous rugby stadium in Dublin. So this is a rugby-themed Irish bar with about a 10 big flat-screen TVs all over the place. I watched the Pats game Sunday here — my Coors light was $6, but it was a nice place.

How does the ice not melt?

  • Tom

That’s a lot of freakin money for a Coors light.

  • Welcome to Noo Yawk, Tom.

Mofo, I assume it’s like some form of refrigeration system or something? The ice is actually lined with a thick layer of frost. But I melted some of it with my finger, there is definitely ice underneath. And below the ice must be some form of lighting system, I guess; the ice was sorta glowing.

  • Funny…i just noticed lansdowne and assumed it was a red sox bar, too!

  • As a Dublin resident and well familiar with THE Lansdowne Road, I’m intrigued. I’ll be in NY come November, must get directions and check this place out (after I’ve been running of course).

Question – Why assume it was a Red Sox bar?

  • Liam – It’s on Tenth Ave. by West 43rd Street, about a 10-minute walk from Times Square. If you want to meet there for a pint, I would be game.

Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox, is on Lansdowne Street in Boston (which of course has a large Irish population). A couple times a season balls are hit out of the ballpark entirely, making for a famous radio call, “looks like it’s going to come down on Lansdowne Street.”

  • Derek, That sounds like a very good idea – The drink that is ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m actually over the weekend after the NYCM – It’s my son’s 21st and we’re hitting New York, so bars are a must. Staying at the Marriott by Brooklyn Bridge, but happy to travel anywhere to meet bloggers and runners. Have a run planned with Sister Smile and her crew on the Saturday morning.

We are in town from Nov 10th thru to the Monday(13) evening, and a weekend of debauchary is what my son is after anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ (I’m not too old for a little of my own!!!!) – If you can see my email, drop me a line off blog)

  • 6 bucks for beer is pretty normal. However, pre-gaming at home is always nice ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Morrissey- naw, I still think $5 is the norm, esp. as far west as Tenth Ave. And when you’re considering the beer is Coors Light! Coppersmiths has $4.50 Bud and Coors Light, and you can normally find a few $4 beers on special at Perdition.

My fav. beers are Bass, Blue Moon and Magic Hat #9, but this was the mid-afternoon so I was just going for something light.

  • Hi guys,

We are still getting our act together over at Lansdowne Road.

Don’t be frightend off by the $6.00 coors light. It was in a 20 ounce pint and we will be having daily drink specials in the very near future!

I stumbled across this blog when I googled our own site which went live this evening.

Stop by and see us. If you can’t find me, I’m probably over at Scruffy’s but ask for my partner Dan.

    Cheers!

    Pat Hughes
