a running post!

So I think I mentioned in passing awhile back that my left knee had been hurty … since about mid-December? Only when I run. It was kinda scary as this is the knee I had arthroscopic surgery on in 2002, so I treated it gingerly as I worried I might have to give up running altogether. Gave up about half my runs for elliptical workouts.

Last month I did the Manhattan half- and thought for the first few miles I might have to drop out, but thankfully things improved.

I also started running on the Central Park bridal path rather than the usual pavement … while that dirt path has been frozen solid the past week it’s generally much softer than the road. I probably should have switched long ago; with the spur that starts near Tavern on the Green you can do about a third of the five-mile loop on the path.

Anyway — the knee had been gradually improving … and Sunday I did the Bronx Half Marathon… around mile nine I finally realized that my knee was not going to start hurting and picked up the pace. I didn’t even really realize I had been holding back! My time wasn’t great — 1:53 — but was actually better than I expected as I’d been out of commission for so long.

I’m back, baby!

P.S. Su I looked for you …

P.P.S. Did not like this race in February so much. (In past years it was run in July) The extreme heat has generally been it’s trademark and has always made it such a slog to get through. It’s just not the same in the cold.
