cycling at soul-cycle

So lately I have been going to Soul-Cycle in Tribeca, this dedicated bike spin studio that opened up a few weeks ago. I am not really a big “spinner” but my right ankle has a touch of tendinitis so I haven’t been running. Plus they had free classes Tuesday and Wednesday morning, so I went […]

resolutions for 2009 update!

Okay, so when I made my resolutions for 2009, I promptly ignored them, unlike my resolutions for 2008. However the nice thing about New Year’s Resolutions is that you have a year to do them. And I have refocused lately and hope to have completed all or nearly all of these this year.

Here they […]

resolutions for 2009

Getting these in under the wire.

1. Get down to 168 lbs. Again. I’m fine with the way I look now at 172, and don’t want to sound like one of those annoying people picking at minor body flaws, but hey, why not?

2. Get that score of 285 on the Marine Corps fitness test. […]

accountability on 2008 new year’s resolutions…

Okay, so I am not going to make any excuses or anything on my 2008 New Year’s Resolutions. I accomplished some, and didn’t accomplish others. I sorta started out strong and lost my resolve around March. But anyway, here are my resolutions from Dec. 2007 and how I’ve done on them.

1. Amassing a score […]

a list of demands

I love this commercial, too. The song is “List of Demands” by Saul Williams. Awesome.

The athletes shown include Adrian Peterson, NFL rookie of the year, racing a dragster; Kevin Durant of the SuperSonics running in a red jersey; Abby Wambach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, in a resistance band; Hope Solo also […]

‘The Uneven Playing Field — Girls’ Sports Injuries’

I thought this story in the NYT magazine was v. interesting particularly for its obv. implications for gender equality. Apparently in the wake of Title IX, girl and young women athletes are getting hurt far more often than male athletes.

Michael Sokolove writes:

Girls and boys diverge in their physical abilities as they enter puberty […]

i’m still here

Hi, sorry about blog-absence, I am still here alive and kicking. New Jersey Marathon on Sunday! I am hoping for about a 3:40 or so. I am still working the overnight shift at the L.U.N.O. (Large Unnamed News Organization).

Actually I need to think about other career options as the company is “regionalizing” the department […]

residence inn ad

You’ve probably seen this before if you watch much TV … but it’s still a pretty amazing ad. The performer is Jinny Jessica Jacinto, a former Cirque du Soleil contortionist. The ad is one of a series shot in Prague and features the re-composed music of Andrew Bird. Stunning.

[…]

‘An Enduring Measure of Fitness: The Simple Push-Up’

Interesting NYT article on push-ups:

As a symbol of health and wellness, nothing surpasses the simple push-up. …

The push-up is the ultimate barometer of fitness. It tests the whole body, engaging muscle groups in the arms, chest, abdomen, hips and legs. It requires the body to be taut like a plank with toes […]

words of power

There are some words and phrases that I feel are good to unlock those last few ergs of power; that are good for pushing yourself through the last repetition while lifting or on through the final leg of a hard run.

I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about.

Some of my favorites:

[…]

the downside of being skinny

Okay, so goal one is accomplished! Or half-accomplished. I have been <168 lbs. for a solid week. Actually I got down under 168 two weeks ago but then gorged at my Super Bowl party and was at 169.5. But now I am back on track. Part two of this first goal is to remain under […]

yoga! pilates!

So as you may have noticed I have sorta drunk the Crossfit Kool-Aid. One of the challenging things about Crossfit is the workouts are so varied it continually keeps you a little bit out of your comfort zone and quickly exposes your weaknesses. When I worked out on my own I was apt to just […]

‘Is your workout wasting your time?’

So I have been working out at gyms since about 1997 or so … but have definitely seen more results in the past eight months doing Crossfit than I have in the past decade. There’s a good article here from BestLife magazine that is worth reading:

Critics also charge that a traditional machine-centric regimen has […]

goals week 2

I am just getting this in under the wire! I promised to do one every week, and ideally this meant Monday or Tuesday. But maybe it is a good thing I am late. Part of the reason for the delay is that earlier I was v. discouraged on the whole diet front … I was […]

‘A Double Beefcake, Light on the Dressing’

Interesting story in Washington Post on new beefcake underwear advertisements for Emporio Armani and Calvin Klein:

The advertisements are celebrations of the male physique, the kind of artistic adoration that dates back to classic statuary. Beckham and Hounsou are photographed to look larger than life, with their muscles exaggerated thanks to dramatic lighting or a […]

isaac

So I have — finally — dropped a couple pounds and am down to 170, according to yesterday’s scale reading. I did get this email from my little teenage half-brother Isaac in New Zealand — the image was titled “beat that.jpg” Yowza!

But Isaac, don’t you know if you are going to write boastful […]

‘fat is the new normal’

I was watching “House” on FOX the other day (the only non-sports program I watch other than “Heroes”) and Dr. House was trying to persuade this obese woman to lose weight. At first he thought she was pregnant, then it turned out she had a benign tumor. But she didn’t want it removed — no, […]

2008 goals week -1

So I am getting a jump start on the Goals for 2008. I have decided to label this week -1 and next week week 0, so as to start 2008 on week 1. (However I want full credit for everything I accomplish in the waning days of 2007!)

Here is my progress so far.

1. […]

Goals for 2008

In past years I have not been one for New Year’s resolutions. But I have three for 2008 and I am going to post them here.

1. Amassing a score of at least 285 out of 300 on the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. To do this I would have to average 19 (strict) pullups […]
