I just got back from reporting on a “chow-off” at the USS Intrepid between various sailors in town for Fleet Week. Mmmm … actually I didn’t have that much to eat — it’s hard to hold a pad and a plate at the same time. But it was still very cool to be there and meet all these Navy chefs from around the world. Sailors from England, Canada (who won), France and Pakistan, in addition to a half-dozen or so teams from U.S. vessels.
My favorite was probably the guys from the Pakistani Navy tanker Moawin, who were taking part in Fleet Week for the first time and seemed totally thrilled about it. (They invited me to come tour their ship, docked in Staten Island, but I had to decline).
Anyway, I did get some great desserts, including this Canadian maple reduction encased in vanilla pudding … mmm. Sometimes, this job can be a lot of fun.
