best running music?

I remember when I was 18, at home during winter break freshman year in college. My father had moved to a new town, and I had nothing much to do with myself — except run, of course. Only, Massachusetts in January is so cold … and at the time I really didn’t have any cold-weather running gear. So it was tough to get going. For motivation, I’d pump up AC/DC’s Thunderstruck . It’d never fail to get me out the door.

In the winter of 1998-’99, training for my first marathon in New Hampshire, I pretty much exclusively listened to Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill and Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled album on my handheld cassette deck.

In the summer I don’t listen to music so much … but now that it’s winter again, I’m looking to refresh the tunes in my little Samsung YP-MT6 MP3 player. With y’all’s help, I also thought I’d try to make a little list of some of the best running music … either angry stuff, tunes with driving beats you can “dance” to at a 7:30 pace, or cheesy lyrics related to running.

  • Just about anything by Rage, esp. “Killing In The Name”, “Freedom”, and “Bullet in the Head”
  • U2’s “Vertigo”, “All Because of You”
  • Pearl Jam’s “Do the Evolution,” “Push Me Pull Me”, “Not For You”, “Hail Hail”
  • AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”, “Moneytalks” and “Are You Ready”
  • Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” (Rocky III theme)
  • Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and “Born in the U.S.A.”
  • Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”
  • Cake’s “The Distance”
  • Veruca Salt’s “Volcano Girls”
  • The Offspring’s “Nitro (Youth Energy)”
  • The Rolling Stones’ “Jumping Jack Flash”
  • Tori Amos’ “Crucify”
  • Beastie Boys’ “Sabatage”, “Fight for Your Right”
  • Liz Phair’s “Supernova”
  • Fatboy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now”
  • Neil Young’s “Freedom”
  • Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”
  • Moby’s “Run On”, “Bodyrock”
  • Guns n’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle,” “It’s So Easy”
  • Hole, “Violet”
  • Brian Setzer Orchestra, “Jump Jive an’ Wail”
  • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, “Jumpin’ Jack”
  • Meredith Brooks, “Bitch”
  • Puff Daddy & the Family, “Victory”
  • Tribe, “Joyride”
  • Stone Temple Pilots, “Vasoline”
  • Silverchair, “Lie to Me”
  • Nirvana, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
  • Cracker, “Let’s Go For a Ride”
  • Kool & The Gang, “Jungle Boogie” (on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)
  • Bush, “Everything Zen”

Please help me out here with suggestions for new songs, or songs you think don’t belong… There are also a pretty good lists of running songs here and here.

UPDATE: Also try,
Good Charlotte, “The Anthem”
Jimmy Eat World, “Pain”

140 comments to best running music?

  • Some of my favorites (keeping it to the less obscure):

Ian Van Dahl – Castles in the Sky
ATB – Let U Go, Believe in Me (Club Mix), Killer 2000, 9PM (Til I come)
Aurora – Ordinary World (Above & Beyond remix)
Moby – James Bond Theme (dance mix)
Ace of Base – Beautiful Life (ok stop laughing…but its got a good beat)
Good Charlotte – Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
    Black Sabbath – Paranoid
    Bon Jovi – Run Away
Bryan Adams – Summer of ’69
    BT – Dreaming (Tiesto Mix)
    Chicane – Don’t Give Up

As far as you selections, a good mix. I would add Cake’s I will Survive and Moby’s James Bond Theme to the list..

I have many trance/dance type tunes that aren’t as familar to the eye as well (which is usually about 80% of my workout music). I’d be happy to share that as well. This was a fun entry to respond to…I’m always looking for new suggestions for music.

  • Excellent. And share away! We always welcome obscurity here.

Brooklyn sent me his running lists, which are in an Excel spreadsheet. I’ve uploaded them: running, warmup and cooldown.

  • I go for lots of techno-based stuff, including the James Bond theme done by Moby (rock on, Uptown Girl). A few others…

    Sanctuary – The Cult
Space Age Love Song – Flock of Seagulls (no, really)
    Manic Depression – Jimi Hendrix
Rock the Body – Moby (might have the title wrong here)
Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen – Baz Lerhman
    Elevation – U2
    Searching – Luther Vandross
I Feel Love – Donna Summer (the 8-minute remix)

  • One tune I’d recommend for you, Mofo, as well as the Running Red Sox fan and maybe Alison is the Dropkick Murphy’s kick-ass, punk version of “Dirty Water” from their album “Live on St. Patrick’s Day.” It rocks.

P.S. Here is Elyssa /Uptown Girl’s Excel spreadsheet of running tunes. Am I the only one without one?

  • Thanks, Derek, for providing a link to my website, jogTunes.com. I welcome any suggestions, comments, and impressions about the site and its content. Your blog has generated some great lists. I plan on checking out the BPMs so I can place them in my site’s database.

    Best,
    Bob

  • Evan

If you want to try some more dance orientated stuff I can make you a mix of some house music the BPM would all be about 120-130, I don’t know if that will keep you on a 7:30 pace or not..
In the meantime you could try:

Bodyrockers – I Like The Way You Move
    Shakedown – Feel Much Better
The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army (Adam Freeland Remix)
The Killers – Somebody Told Me (Mylo Club Mix)
    Junior Jack – Stupid Disco
Boogie Pimps – Somebody to Love (Remix)
Kings of Tomorrow – Thru (Junior Jack Remix)
    Freestylers – Push Up

  • never too late to respond to this one i guess…

first off, those who do read my blog know my tastes run towards the dancier side…though i will stick other genres in occasionally.

in terms of full-length CD’s-i stand by Madonna’s “Confessions on a Dancefloor” and also love Kylie Minogue’s “Fever”-the latter CD barely left my CD walkman while running loops in the Central Park in the summer of ’03. Both have upbeat, fast-paced songs, and I never felt the need to skip over a song (unless there was a song i wanted to repeat.)

    Songs…anything by the following artists:
Madonna (especially “Holiday” and “Ray of Light”)
Kylie Minogue (especially “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” and “Better the Devil You Know”)
Deborah Cox (especially “Easy As Life” and “Things Just Ain’t the Same”)
(and if you have songs by any of those artists on your playlist during the first mile or 2 of a half marathon, you *will* go out too fast. i’m jes sayin 🙂 )

And a few (or more than a few) others I love:
    Move On Up-Curtis Mayfield
    Don’t Stop Movin’-Livin’ Joy
    Cruel Summer-Bananarama
    Karma (Karmastition Remix)-Alicia Keys
    Run Away-Real McCoy
    Move Your Body-Eiffel 65
    Un-break My Heart-Toni Braxton
    The Warrior-Scandal
    Could You Be Loved-Bob Marley
    One More Time-Daft Punk
    Love On My Mind-Freemasons
    Put Em High-Stonebridge
    Music Sounds Better With You-Stardust
    Pump It-Black Eyed Peas
    Fill Me In-Craig David
This Is How We Do It-Montell Jordan
    I Turn To You-Melanie C
    This Love-Maroon 5
    Desert Rose (remix)-Sting
No More Drama (remix)-Mary J. Blige
    Red Alert-Basement Jaxx
    Rich Girl-Gwen Stefani
    Insomnia-Faithless
    Good Life-Inner City
    Check The Rhime-Tribe Called Quest
    Hey Ya-Outkast
    Little Red Corvette-Prince
    Whenever Wherever-Shakira

little bit of a tangent-anyone in the NY metro area remember WLIR/92.7-a radio station that broadcasted out of Long Island? Between 1999 and 2002…that played the best mix of non-top 40 dance and a little (non-hard) rock…i remember seeing their top song list of 2000 (i think that was the year) not too long ago and thinking…a lot of these songs would make awesome running playlist.

wow, guess i got carried away here. a topic like this is catnip for me.

  • […] I am making myself a ferocious running mix for my MP3 player. We are talking 512 MB of fast-paced running tunes. Thank you to everyone that contributed to my last post on running music, esp. • pdxrunner

My favorite new running song is “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. Speaks to me as a runner who is embraces the less than sane appearance that running often puts out to nonrunners. I got my first “Run Forest Run” from such an observer a few weeks back and it made my year. Check out this song and I bet it will speak to you.

  • 2000+milesofpain

Good sugestions by the rest of you ….BUT … there is one song above all else that is absolutly essential for all long distance runners.

    Final Countdown – Europe

I kid you not this song is so stimulating i actualy get sexually aroused by it in the middle of races.

In my oppinion you want this song about 2/3rds of the way through your playlist as it so that it hits you probably at the time your starting to flag it starts of slow and steady probably at the pace you’ll be plodding a long at and gets faster in the middle resulting in you picking up the pace a little (not that you’ll notice because you jusst be completly absordbed by the awesomness of this tune

  • PODS

Just got the new 1gig MP3, did a search and found your blog..

    Dream On – Aerosmith
Where the Streets Have No Name – U2
    Everything Zen – Bush

    Happy Running!

  • Kiel

If you like a little inspiration rather than some mindless euro/techno trash then you really need “Sinnerman” by nina simone.

  • Cara

eminem- hes really angry. the best running ones are “Never Enough” and “My 1st Single”

Touch the Sky is great by Kanye west. so is Heart of a Champion by nelly. theyre both inspirational.

  • Hi! My name is Peter Andersson and I live in Sweden. I’ve been running to music since I got my first Walkman and nowadays I run to mp3s. I’m also a writer and this year I’ve taken up promoting running with music on a local online community for runners by writing a series of articles about it. I’ve coined the running term SPM (Steps Per Minute) as a compliment to the music term BPM (Beats Per Minute) to highlight the correlation between music and running. Following below here (if the comments field can handle it) is my top 200 list sorted by SPM. For a top 50 quality list check out the subpage http://k1chyd.adress.eksjo.com/running4.htm on my homepage. Up until 4 years ago I used to run all the time. Then I got a stress-filled job that really eliminated that possibility-in three weeks I will be leaving that job and I am going to emerse myself back into running-thank God-I cant wait.I have looked at the songs listed here and already have some of them on my ipod and the ones I didn’t I have downloaded. There were some great ones listed. Great site-I’ll be back to check out some more songs. God it will be great to feel the freedom of running again!!!!!!!!!!

  • Peter Andersson

Hi, it’s Peter Andersson again, the 200 running songs list man, this blog and the songs listed are great but after all it’s just a blog. Check out Dr Bob’s site http://www.jogtunes.com, we’re trying to get a community going there, I myself have already listed some new stuff.

  • runningsbetterncrack

Great site! Always looking for fantastic run music. Thanks for Arctic Monkey’s, never heard of ’em before this thread, great band. My mp3 is all over the place, from Bob Marley to Justin Timberlake. Lots of hair bands, GnR, Skid Row, Poison, Bon Jovi. I’ve also got about 20 of the Killers songs. Great tunes to run to. Keep ’em coming.

  • Just want to thank Derek and everyone for your support of JogTunes.com. This blog is my greatest source of hits other than my new site, jogtunesindie.com. This new site is the home site for my new podcast, The JogTunesIndie Podcast. It’s a 30 minute show with BPM rated indie songs sequenced for a relatively casual run. The maximum rate is usually in the 180s with warm-up and cool-down in the 150s-160s range. Please check it out and send comments to comments@jogtunes.com. I’d love to hear from you.

    Best,
    Bob the joggernut

  • Hi Derek,

Just wanted to let you and everyone know of a new website launched yesterday http://www.run2rhythm.com.

Runners can download music specifically designed for their running requirements in 15, 30, 45 or 60 minute lots, and for different cadences. So no changing of songs, breaks or beat disruptions. It is not commercial music, so you can’t hear it on the radio or buy it in the stores, however because a number of different genres are included there is sure to be something to cater for everyones tastes.

This is a world first! Hope it helps.

    Kind regards,
    Kristen

  • Lee

I love running to Franz Ferdinand. Great dance band.

  • themofo

You know, upon further reflection, I think there are two types of running music out there: longer, slower, repetitive songs that are good for helping you tune out and motor along on a long run, and more techno-oriented stuff that gets your legs pumping for a fast few miles.

For example, I think two great songs for long runs are ‘Sailing’ by Christopher Cross, and the theme song to ‘The Bounty’ by Vangelis (the same guy who did themes for St. Elmo’s Fire, Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire). You let them play and pretty much just forget where you are or where you’re going.

For the faster, harder stuff, I like fast, guitar-heavy songs like ‘The Chemicals Between Us’ by Bush. And usually I run four or five miles on a busy college track, so once I get something like that blaring in my ears, I start bookin’ and weaving between the slower runners. That gets the adrenaline pumping even more, and it goes from there. Good stuff.

  • I HIGHLY suggest buck 65’s “Wicked and Weird” for the middle of your run….
    Give it a shot…

Also, the ULTIMATE warmup song is the theme to “The Sopranos”.
I believe it is by Alabama 3 and it is called “Woke Up This Morning”…..

    Super site….

  • thebigd

hey: doesn’t anyone have any suggestions for the older generation? I am 50 ish and still run but need some suggestions for downloads. I’ve never heard of most of these bands!!!

  • Lantis

FOR thebigd: I would suggest instrumental songs (see my previous posts). It does not make your mind concentrate on the meaning of the words (you can turn off your brain a bit more and just run).

  • themofo

    Big D–

Four Sticks by Led Zeppelin. Can’t You Hear Me Knocking by the Stones (including the latin instrumental). Or if you were punking out back in the day, anything by the Sex Pistols.

  • FancyPants

I tend to go for the steady beat and inspirational lyrics as apposed to the insane guitar and tech-trance junk. Hyper beats burn me out too quickly.

Here are my top 10 favorites…

    10. Slade – Run Run Away
    9. McFly – Don’t stop me now
    8. Relient K – Pressing on
    7. Gina G – Just a little bit
    6. Christina Aguilera – Fighter
    5. Garbage – Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go)
    4. Superchick – Stand in the Rain
    3. Survivor – Eye of the Tiger
    2. Phil Collins – Son of Man
    1. Audio Adrenaline – Underdog

Thanks to everyone else for their contributions. I’ve listened to many of the songs in your posts. Some I love, some don’t work for me. But it’s good to have some new tunes so I don’t wear out my favorites…

  • barney

There is some good suggestions here definitely. Trivium’s “falling to grey” and genesis’ “jesus he knows me” both are fast enough to get u pumped, especially the first one.

  • Speedwork: Most anything by Dragonforce. The songs are really long and the BPM is great, as well the majestic harmonies I find very inspirational and keep me going up the hills. If you want something for sub 7:00 miles check out the tune “Black Winter Night” .
