best running music?

I remember when I was 18, at home during winter break freshman year in college. My father had moved to a new town, and I had nothing much to do with myself — except run, of course. Only, Massachusetts in January is so cold … and at the time I really didn’t have any cold-weather running gear. So it was tough to get going. For motivation, I’d pump up AC/DC’s Thunderstruck . It’d never fail to get me out the door.

In the winter of 1998-’99, training for my first marathon in New Hampshire, I pretty much exclusively listened to Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill and Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled album on my handheld cassette deck.

In the summer I don’t listen to music so much … but now that it’s winter again, I’m looking to refresh the tunes in my little Samsung YP-MT6 MP3 player. With y’all’s help, I also thought I’d try to make a little list of some of the best running music … either angry stuff, tunes with driving beats you can “dance” to at a 7:30 pace, or cheesy lyrics related to running.

  • Just about anything by Rage, esp. “Killing In The Name”, “Freedom”, and “Bullet in the Head”
  • U2’s “Vertigo”, “All Because of You”
  • Pearl Jam’s “Do the Evolution,” “Push Me Pull Me”, “Not For You”, “Hail Hail”
  • AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”, “Moneytalks” and “Are You Ready”
  • Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” (Rocky III theme)
  • Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and “Born in the U.S.A.”
  • Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”
  • Cake’s “The Distance”
  • Veruca Salt’s “Volcano Girls”
  • The Offspring’s “Nitro (Youth Energy)”
  • The Rolling Stones’ “Jumping Jack Flash”
  • Tori Amos’ “Crucify”
  • Beastie Boys’ “Sabatage”, “Fight for Your Right”
  • Liz Phair’s “Supernova”
  • Fatboy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now”
  • Neil Young’s “Freedom”
  • Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”
  • Moby’s “Run On”, “Bodyrock”
  • Guns n’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle,” “It’s So Easy”
  • Hole, “Violet”
  • Brian Setzer Orchestra, “Jump Jive an’ Wail”
  • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, “Jumpin’ Jack”
  • Meredith Brooks, “Bitch”
  • Puff Daddy & the Family, “Victory”
  • Tribe, “Joyride”
  • Stone Temple Pilots, “Vasoline”
  • Silverchair, “Lie to Me”
  • Nirvana, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
  • Cracker, “Let’s Go For a Ride”
  • Kool & The Gang, “Jungle Boogie” (on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)
  • Bush, “Everything Zen”

Please help me out here with suggestions for new songs, or songs you think don’t belong… There are also a pretty good lists of running songs here and here.

UPDATE: Also try,
Good Charlotte, “The Anthem”
Jimmy Eat World, “Pain”

Can’t forget Motley Crue’s “Kickstart my heart”. Always gets me going.

  • eric

it’s been years since anyone has posted something by electric six, but their songs have pulled me through the wall many times. “danger, high voltage” is already on the list, but these are also good:

    kukuxumusu
    randy’s hot tonight
    down at mcdonnelzz
    dance epidemic
    flashy man
we were witchy witchy white women
    slices of you
    rock and roll evacuation

sorry for the single band dominance, but they’re my most reliable songs.

  • Joe

    Simple……….

    Metallica- And Justice For All

can we get any download links? there are loads of dj mixes out there do you always use playlists?

  • I thought about creating an iMix on itunes, but there’s a 100-song limit… and would people really pay $100 to download the mix? Of course you can always use Frostwire or whatever to find your own copies, but I’m not going to host illegal downloads on my website. I have been using just one big playlist for my iPhone.

  • heeeey awesome list… a few suggestions maybe sandstorm- by darude. ima shine fabulous i think not sure on that one but overall ur list is flawless.

When I run I need constant fast adrenaline pumping music, whether it be dance, rock, pop, hip-hop, but never ever anything that lags for more than a few seconds, no neil young, no radiohead, no ballads. If you’re the same way, I guarantee every one of these songs will get you going faster, harder, and amped. I also can’t listen to house/techno stuff when I run, so if you can’t either, there’s none of that here.
Here are some of the bests:

    Rihanna-Breakin Dishes
    Bif Naked-Tango Shoes
Bloodhound Gang-Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo (good to go steady, easy pace, slight pickup here and there)
    Britney Spears- Toxic
Buckcherry- Lit up & Crazy Bitch & Pump it Up
Cut Chemist ft. Hymnal- What’s the Altitude
    DJ Khaled- We Takin Over
    Edwyn Collins- Girl Like You
Eve ft. Sean Paul- Give it to You
    Faithless- Mass Destruction
Fall Out Boy- I Don’t Care, Dance Dance, Tiffany Blews
The Fratellis- Cigarello, Flathead, The Gutterati, For the Girl (make you run SO hard)
The Futureheads- Beginning of the Twist
Girl Talk- Smash Your Head, Bounce That, Once Again (he can be hard to find a rhythm to, but it gets me going)
Gomez- Machisimo (gone in 60 second soundtrack), Catch Me Up
Gwen Stefani- What You Waitin For?
    Eve-I Got What You Need
    K’Naan- Bang Bang
Kevin Rudolf- She Can Get It, Let it Rock
The Knux- Bang Bang, Cappucino (This should be #1 on top 40 I don’t get it),
Lady Gaga- Just Dance, Poker Face (If you aren’t sick of these yet)
Lady Sovereign- Hoodie, Love Me or Hate Me
    Lil Mama- Shorty Get Loose

  • Hi there all,

Thanks for adding all these great suggestions. I wonder if there are any mixed albums anyone knows of that I could just download, rather than compiling a long play list?
I’m training for my first half marathon to raise money to buy wheelchairs for disabled kids, and just can’t get my music right – it keeps slowing me down!
I like pretty much any kind of music, but really need something at 140 – 160 bpm…

PS – feel free to sponsor me! Every little helps!

  • RUNNERS WHO ROCK!

I’ve never realized I could fall in love with running until I started really obsessing about the music I run to. Now I write a blog about it for Nike. Check it out: http://inside.nike.com/blogs/nikerunning_sportmusic-en_US/

Here’s a sample playlist from my personal collection of Drum ‘N Bass, which hits at around 175 BPM:

Music Is Everything (Influx UK Remix) – High Contrast 174
Round the Corner (Vocal Remix) – London Electricity 178
    Shake Ur Body – Shy FX & T-Power 175

Rock It – Sub Focus 177

  • All of these fantastic lists, I’m glad I live in an age where I can order cool music without leaving my house,
just need to have a job to pay for the credit card and all is well 🙂

@ Peter Andersson, nice organization of spm, I will being using some of your suggestions.

@ Amber, wow, you run too much! I can only get in 5-10 songs a run.

I prefer an aggressive beat, with hard hitting drums.

    Eminem’s Loose Yourself
Sean Paul, anything with the right tempo
Osibisa, a 70s African Funk Band, has some great tracks
Johnny Clegg, a South African guitarist and band leader, great stuff!

  • Aaahhh…. I adore Tori Black, she is so sexy. Pondering if she is still looking for the right one.
