WP has done a nice job of digging into this issue in general. You should check out this article from last week on how the fence probably won’t get built at all. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/05/AR2006100501935.html
Whatever you think of its feasibility (um, not) or sense (insane), I think it’s worth noting that Bush himself didn’t support it, and still doesn’t. I can only hope that the tides will turn such that international and (reasonable) domestic opinion will override the crazy, xenophobic right-wingers that are the only reason this thing passed.
Leave it to the Washington comPost to guage the pulse of the American public? Dream on. If the fence were such an impractical proposition, then why is the Mexican government whining to the U.N. about it? What are they so afraid of, if not secure borders?
