Gotta say I’m v. happy with the Daisuke Matsuzaka near-signing. A 26-year-old stud pitcher from Japan. This is great. But WTF, WTF, WTF with the $70 million JD Drew contract when they only offered Johnny Damon $40M???

It appears we’ve brought back Mirabelli and signed Julio Lugo for $36 million over four years.

After the jump, video of Dice-K at work.

Dude, who’s gonna replace Trot in right? What better player is out there than Drew? He could have monster season after season hitting behind Papi and Manny. Plus, he’s a corner guy, with more power, just as much range and a better arm than Damon. Of course he’s getting more money. Obv. this year’s market is much different than last, with Soriano’s deal and the huge extension offered V. Wells. And Drew gave up 33 mil for 3 years, so you knew he was going to get on average more than Damon. Whether Drew can stay healthy is the issue, but that’s an issue for every player. Look at Mo Vaughn’s career after his huge free agent deal — headed from MVP/Hall of Fame-bound with the Sox to the just another guy with the Angels and Mets.

Where’d you find the Youtube bit of Dice-K? On a Yankees fan site? 7 runs in one inning is rough against a bunch of small guys is a bad omen. He’s gonna face huge expectations in the Hub.

  • Daisuke M. is actually a fourth generation Japanefied Chinese, as some Japanese who don’t like baseball, are quick to point out. But when you become a famous sports figure, your otherwise undesirable heritage is quickly forgotten.

  • I hear rental rates on apartments in Pawtucket are quite good this winter. Not a very good outing.
