H. passed this along to me — the independent picture “The Spirit of Marathon” will be shown in 450 theaters at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 _ next Thursday _ including the Union Square Stadium 14 and the AMC Empire 25 near Times Square.
(I can’t seem to buy online tickets for the Times Square theater, although I’m not sure if that’s because they’re not available online or it’s sold out. Those are the only two Manhattan theaters showing it; there’s also one in Astoria).
It follows six runners _ Deena Kastor, Daniel Njenga and four amateurs _ as they train for the Chicago Marathon. It also features interviews with various running greats as Bill Rodgers, Paula Radcliffe, Dick Beardsley and Joan Benoit-Samuelson.
According to the Web site,
Spirit of the Marathon is the first ever non-fiction feature film to capture the drama and essence of the famed 26.2 mile running event. Filmed on four continents, the movie brings together a diverse cast of amateur athletes and marathon luminaries.
As six unique stories unfold, each runner prepares for and ultimately faces the challenge of the Chicago Marathon. More than a sports movie, Spirit of the Marathon is an inspirational journey of perseverance and personal triumph; a spectacle that will be embraced by runners and non-runners alike.
