Off to the airport in an hour or two. Very sad. Brief sojurn in L.A., then back to New York on Friday. Still, you know it’s been a good vacation when you have tan-lines like these:
Other random thoughts … New Zealand legalized prostitution last year — to go along with its gambling, which has been legal for many years now. All the casinos I saw were about the size of a pub, and not exactly impressive. I took this to be a brothel — a “massage” parlour with a drawing of a topless woman. (Sorry picture is blurry):
Neither of these seemed very controversial, at least as far as I could tell. No big deal. And now the NZ government’s Occupational Health & Safety Service has even put out a 100-page manual (large PDF) with tips for “sex-trade” workers. (Related press release).
And lastly, on the next page is a picture of some bunny-eating. The white ones are delicious!
I like the new layout. You should come to the Oscar party Sunday night. It’s a good way to reacclimate to the US!

Do they have much of a problem with the prostitution or gambeling?
Also, I’m curious, I see you have a new layout. Was it inspired by my blog, or did you get the same person I did to make the template?

Ron, this is actually the default layout for WordPress 1.5. At some point I should actually get around to customizing it… but pretty, ain’t it?
My only research on prostitution and gambling involved talking to a few friends who live there … From what they told me, every few months there would be stories about some guy gambling away the rent money, but they didn’t think it was a major problem.
And my friends thought that legalizing prostitution had improved really improved things for prostitutes and public health. As one friend told me, pre-legalization, a prostitute might give in to having unsafe sex. Post-legalization, she is able to say to customers, “Hey, if we don’t use a rubber, I could get fined $2,000 by the government!”
