The strike is on

3:38 a.m. UPDATE: Totally scooped everyone … had it like five minutes before the MTA’s Tom Kelly even announced talks had broken down!

(Okay, so I also had it before the transit union’s executive board actually voted 28-10 to authorize the strike. But hey, it was clear they were going to, and I was right…)

Man, and here I was logging into NY1 for the latest news.

Does anyone else feel like it is a snow day from school? I’m thinking productivity is going to be shot today at work.

  • It feels like a snow day from school…although now I can say I walked 3.5 miles in the freezing cold to work….minus the snow.

  • What’s the over/under on how long the strike will last? I’m giving it 36 hours, which means subways running again by noon tomorrow.

  • Hell. Getting to the airport today is going to be very, very bad.

  • It only took me 45 mins to get to work today and I have absolutely nothing to do, anyone have any college papers they need help with?

MTA can’t keep me down. I actually got to work on time because of their little strike. damnit.

  • 4.5 miles and one bridge later, it took me 2 ours to get in today (Ok, that was because there were multiple stops for coffee, but still).

  • In the unlikely event that the TWU had voted not to strike, we could have held this blog post up as the new version of “Dewey Defeats Truman”… or “It’s Gephardt.”

    Jon,

I must say I agree with you…it certainly is like a snow day from work. I teach in midtown at JKO High School and only 8 kids showed up out of 850…I am loving it!

  • i’ll say this much, i can’t enjoy this like it’s a snow day.

i might be playing devil’s advocate here, but i’m in the situation where the work still has to get done, and clients and such still expect “business as usual.” i can do some stuff from home, but i know it is inevitable that i will have to go into the office. and my options are either walk 3.5 miles each way or spend $40 a day on cabs. neither option is favorable, especially since who knows how long this is gonna go on for? one day? one week? one month?

sorry…just needed to vent 🙂 i do know, in the whole scheme of things, it could be a lot worse…
