vegas, baby … or not

las vegasSo my good friend Dylan is getting married in June … and I’m seriously considering not coming to the bachelor party. Lame, huh? But jeez, I just don’t see how I can afford this extravagant three-day weekend in Vegas the best man has planned. I got an email from him yesterday, saying to budget $1,000 for the trip, above and beyond the cost of hotel and airfare. Ummm … not all of us are corporate lawyers!

Among the budget items:

  • $300 each for “strip cash.” I assume he is not talking about the Las Vegas strip, here.
  • $110 for a mountain bike tour. Gee, that’s almost as much as my mountain bike cost.
  • $150 for “in-room entertainment” … i.e., a two or three-girl, 90-minute “show” at $1,000/hr.
  • $70 for a limo. (Aren’t we staying on the strip?)

It would be a lot of fun to hang out with the guys … but gee, I don’t see how I can swing this. Some of those costs are no doubt discretionary — but I think I’d feel a bit like a party-pooper if I didn’t join in with all the others.

strippersAlso: I just sorta feel like I’ve outgrown strip clubs. (I’ve probably made about a dozen trips, most recently at a ’03 bachelor party, excluding work-related visits). I haven’t even been to the club around the corner from me (Interestingly enough, though, when I run past it on Friday nights it seems like nearly everyone heading there are couples).

And I am not really that curious to know what goes on at a $1,000/hr, multi-girl “show.” No moral hangups — my little stepsister worked as a stripper for awhile — it just doesn’t appeal that much to me. Maybe it would if I’d been married for years, like the best man?

Am I being crazy, passing up on this party/male-bonding opportunity?

  • You can score a room with two other people for $90 per night total at the Sahara, on the weekends. Can also cut the strip cash down to the $20 door charge and $6 beers (prices for the Crazy Horse) and just tell the girls you don’t want any dances. Cut the mountain bike trip. That’ll save you a few hundred right there.

  • I think that it sounds like what the guys will be doing is mostly watching girls. If you’re into that I am sure you can scrounge up the cash 😉

But like my husband says you are paying to get all fired up and then to have nothing done about it!

Sounds like a waste of money to me 😉

  • Dylan

Yes. See my email for reasons to come and get hammered and look at naked chicks Big D.

  • Hey Derek,
I’m working on a book about bachelor parties and would love to include the original email (or the email chain) in the book. I can change names, etc. What do you think? Let me know.
    Best,
    David
