Twitter Updates for 2010-02-19

hi y’all!

Hello! Yeah, I’m on an irregular posting schedule these days. You could say this blog is on life support. To some extent Facebook and Twitter have supplanted unfocused personal blogs like this one. But whatever, I still like having it out there as an outlet for me. Plus, without it where would all the people discussing broken necks go? So anyway. Yeah, I was laid off in November. I worked for a little bit at a well-known Internet gossip site (that I can’t name, sorry), but that wasn’t for me. So just finished my yoga teacher training at Sonic Yoga in Hell’s Kitchen! We’ll see if that’s something I could possibly pursue full-time (I’d likely have to really cut my expenses to survive on that income), but it was a great experience.

What else. I have been using a time-management technique I read about in the Wall Street Journal to stay on track during my “funemployment.” The Pomodoro Technique! You basically set a tomato timer (or an iPhone app, but I like to hear ticking down of a tomato timer) to 25 minutes. That is one Pomodoro, during which you have to stay absolutely focused and on track. No checking emails, Facebook or nytimes.com! After one Pomodoro you get to take a five-minute break, and after four you get a longer break. So back to my Pomodoros!

  • Wrapping things up at tmz… #
  • Just remembered I have just four hours to try and complete my 2009 New Year's Resolutions!!!! Here goes…. #
  • Said resolutions include scoring 285+ on marine corps fitness challenge and an unsupported headstand… #

resolutions for 2010, accountability for ’09

Okay. Again this year, getting these in under the wire. Here’s how I did for my 2009 resolutions:

1. Get down to 168 lbs. SUCCESS! My scale says I’m at 165. (and, um, 6% body fat — can that be right?). I really was rather stunned when I weighed myself — I thought I’d be closer to 170.
2. Get that score of 285 on the Marine Corps fitness test. Carryover from 2008. FAIL. Grr. Just tried to accomplish this one in the waning hours of ’09. Did 20 pull-ups (but realized afterward I didn’t quite do them to grade — my palms were facing each other on a bar perpendicular to my body, which I didn’t know wasn’t allowed), ran three miles on a treadmill at 1% grade in 18:02, but only got 74 situps in two minutes. That’s only good for 274, more or less. Dammit.
3. Find stable employment that doesn’t involve so many nights and weekends. Fail…
4. Yoga resolutions: be able to do full wheel for a minute, standing split with fingertips on floor, a headstand in the center of the room and a handstand even if against the wall. Also: do yoga everyday for a month. Mostly success. Got the full wheel down, standing split, handstand against a wall, yoga everyday for a month. But the headstand in the center of the room has proven elusive. I’m very close and had hoped to succeed tonight. But no.
5. Run another marathon. Success!

Now, for 2010:

1. Keep weight under 170 lbs, body fat under 10%.
2. Get that score of 285 on the Marine Corps Fitness Test, dammit.
3. Find stable employment OR do something entrepreneurial that can support myself.
4. Go to another national park out west.
5. Nail that unsupported handstand and headstand. Practice yoga at least 4x a week all this year, except for vacations.
6. Run a marathon in under 3:40. Get up to 70 miles a week in training.
7. Spend three hours every weekend tidying the apartment.
