derek’s big day

So I am just back from picking up my bib number at the marathon expo, which is always fun and exciting. But that was not the most thrilling part of my day so far. Oh no.

Earlier, I accepted a new job and gave notice on my current one.

Yup, after six years as a general assignment reporter at a Big City Tabloid Newspaper, I have decided it is time to move on. I start Nov. 20 as an editor at a Large Unnamed News Organization (henceforth: LUNO). I’ll be editing stories of national significance.

This is a big step for me, one I’m very excited about. For you, my readers, it will mean a few changes … for now, at least I won’t be blogging about journalism-related stuff at all. I guess this “edgy” blog has, um … well, like I said, I’m going to be keeping it a little more professional from now on. Will use better judgment! And no more comma splices.

Oh — and can I mention — the woman who hired me actually reads my blog? Yup, and I still got the job. (Now seems like a good time to praise her impeccable taste, great news judgment and how she seems like an all-around stupendous human being. But this will be the last time we mention her here, actually).

lunoAnd seriously: I’m really thrilled about this opportunity. Editing is something I’m good at, I think. I’ve always enjoyed the writing part of being a reporter a little more than the actual reporting part. And there are a lot of areas for advancement at said LUNO, which seems to be well-positioned for the Internet age.

I’ll have a little more to say about my decision to leave reporting and try my hand at editing later, but for now, I just wanted to let y’all know.
