new job, new phone

nokia 8260So here’s a little exciting thing about the new job: I get to buy a new phone! For the past six years I’ve been using work-issued cell phones. This is good in that they are free (for me). It is bad in that I never got a top-of-the-line phone. Well in 2002 I did buy a used Nokia 8260 off eBay and use that for awhile. What a great little phone that was — does anyone remember that? So small you could slip it into the pouch of your running shorts. But then the paper changed wireless providers and I had to give it up.

But now I will be buying my own cell phone. And, truth be told, I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve spent so long enviously eyeing my friends’ Motorola Qs and Treos and Blackberries and RAZRs. Now it is Derek-time.

So what should I buy? A Blackberry Pearl? (I could blog from wherever!) A RAZR? (Maybe a little played out.) A PEBL? (Do I need to be that stylish?) The Q? (Hmm, the Pearl loks better) The LG Chocolate? (Mmmmaybe, but I already have an MP3 player). The Sony Ericsson W810i? (Hmmm hmm indeedy!) Or a Sony Ericsson K800i Cyber-shot? (I could take great photos!)

I’ve had Verizon, which seems to be the best network for NYC, but do people have thoughts on the others? Any advice re: phones?

  • I’ve had Verizon since 2000…I feel “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I’m due for an upgrade next October, and I think my next purchase may be a Treo-so I can ditch the PDA and just just combine the 2…

  • From what I understand, the RAZR is a terrible phone – it’s all style and no substance, since it uses old technology. I’ve heard good things about Treos (especially compared to BBerry’s) but have never used them…

There are a host of new phones coming out around Christmas, but I guess there are new phones coming out all the time. Check out http://www.mobileburn.com http://www.phonearena.com or some such, they’ll have a tonne of advice… and definitely don’t get a RAZR when you could get a KRZR or a RIZR! What about a Nokia N80… Wifi and 3megapixel camera.

  • […] Stopped into Cingular, Verizon and a T-Mobile stores today to continue my quest to buy a new cell phone. I like to get a lot of information before making decisions. Have narrowed my options to the Sony Ericsson W810i (Cingular), the Blackberry Pearl (T-Mobile) and the Samsung A990 (Verizon). The prices online are a lot less than the ones in stores — Amazon has the A990 for $249, $100 less than Verizon. Still have to check out Sprint phones. […]
