more sexism from the NYRR???

Okay, I am all for women’s racing, women’s races, etc. etc. I don’t really mind the female-only races like the Mini 10K, the More Marathon, the More Half-Marathon or the Junior League Mother’s Day 10-miler.

But why must EVERY YEAR the men get up an hour earlier than the women for the Al Gordon Snowflake race? Why do the women get to sleep in every single year? (8 a.m. start for the men vs. a 9 a.m. start for the women …. note that last year I stood around in the cold and cheered for the women).

Come on folks. Mix things up a little! I know this might not be the most weighty issue when it comes to gender equality and I am not going to lose any sleep over it … well, actually, I will lose some sleep over it! An hour every year I actually run the dang thing, unlike this year.

So please. Alternate.

  • hey, you don’t hear the ladies complaining when we have to wait an hour for our race in the summer (Club Champs)…another hour for the weather to get hotter and more humid. 🙂

Only thing I can think of why they do men before women is logistical reasons…having to have the start/finish area as clear as possible for the second race (just based on net times, less men finished in over an hour than women…)

If you really feel so strongly about this-fire off an email to our Club Council reps. seriously. they’ll listen.

  • Do you really think it gets any hotter? (8 a.m. vs. 9 a.m.) In general I’d rather race later rather than sooner. Maybe they could swap both races every year.

I looked up the results for Saturday – out of 2288 women and 2368 men, 17 women and 10 men finished in over an hour … it doesn’t really seem like a big deal.

The downside of running the later women’s race was that the cups at the water stops were frozen solid by the time we got there!
