the ultimate running mix

police sirenOkay boys and girls … I’ve done it. With help from Flygirl, Uptown Girl, the Mofo, Cris and Evan, I have created the Ultimate Running Music Mix. It ranges from Elvis Presley to the Electric Light Orchestra, Britney Spears to Fatboy Slim, Veruca Salt to the Prodigy. And I have to say, it rocks. It will make you run faster.

I still have room for a few more tunes, so suggestions welcome, then I’m going to finalize it. And if you’re a friend or a frequent blog commenter, drop me a line with your mailing address…

P.S. I think this is my most inspired creation of the year.

  • I have to admit, this does seem like a pretty sweet running playlist.

  • ariana

The Drudge siren is a nice touch! Can’t you get it animated like he does?

  • Tom

Yes, a good list indeed. And props for not being embarassed about putting Chumbawamba and Good Charlotte on. (They rev me up, too.)

  • oh man … I was kidding myself when I said I was going to “finalize” this soon. How did I have three Stones songs and nothing from the Beatles? (I’m thinking “Back in the U.S.S.R.” or “Birthday”). And no Beyonce or Buckcherry? Does the Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” make the cut? What about “The Time Warp” from Rocky Horror? Hmmm.

Ariana, I couldn’t find an animated siren, alas.

  • Dylan

Great choices (except Kelly Clarkson) Big D. Here’s my $.02:

    Smashing Pumpkins – Perfect
    Frankie – Relax
Big Head Todd & The Monsters – Bittersweet
    Counting Crows – Hanginaround
Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues
Postal Service – Such Great Heights
When in Rome – The Promise
Steppenwolf – Born to be wild
    Led Zeppelin – Ramble On
    James – Laid
Beatles – Why don’t we do it in the road
Springsteen – Philadelphia, or I’m on Fire

For Limp Bizkit, I’d go with Take a Look Around
For Weezer, I’d go with Island in the Sun
For Offspring, I’d go with Come Out and Play
For U2, I’d go with Beautiful Day or Where the Streets Have No Name
For GNR, I’d go with Knocking on Heaven’s Door

    Crazy D

  • Thanks Dyl. Some great songs, but I’m only taking fast-paced music here, which discounts a number of those.

I’m looking at the Paul Oakenfold Perfecto Mix of “Beautiful Day” for possible inclusion, though, and “Born to be Wild”, “Relax” and “Take a Look Around” may make the cut. Still listening to some of the others.

  • Lots of tunes I don’t recognize, but from what I can tell, that looks awesome!

(It’s almost an unfair advantage. The anti-doping commision may have to take away your last PR!)

  • CL

Yes, only put fast stuff on. (That prohibits most Beatles, though.)

My #1 running (on treadmill) song is: Time Bomb by Rancid. Very fast.

  • That’s a pretty good list, Derek. You might also check out “Adrenaline” by Bush. The lyrics rock and fit right into what running is all about sometimes especially when we’re pushing through a long tough run.

As for fast songs to keep you going, Rob Zombie – dragula, Ram Jam – Black Betty and Rednex – Cotton Eyed Joe (Techno Remix) are a few of my favs. Rednex has a few pretty hoppin tunes worth checkin out. Just depends on your taste buds.

    I don’t always comment, but I’m often here. 🙂

  • Peanut

I don’t know if its appropriate to ask, but can I get a copy of the music from you? I am almost recovered from a hip injury and am looking forward to running very soon. Thanks.

  • Looks like I’ve got some more songs to go down-..uh, purchase. Since finding songs from your last set of lists, I’ve really gotten addicted to quite a few of them, Thunderstruck in particular.

  • Yay! Looks like a great list you got there…..I may need to “purchase” these songs:)

  • dj

I can’t find Cracker: Let’s Go For A Ride. Is that Uncle Craker?

  • Um, no the name of the band is Cracker. It’s on their 1993 album, Kerosene Hat.

  • Dee

Wow your list is so like mine. Xcept plus or minus a few I have staceys mom (2 remind me of why I walk) Cherry Pie, Warrent Thanks for the ideas

  • Mars

Wow. This sounds a lot like my playlist! Great ears run alike….

No Jimmy Buffett?? My Gosh how can you work out without drooling about a cheeseburger? Otherwise not to bad.

  • Stacy

I listen to Ozzy’s I Don’t Wanna Stop. That and Dragula by Rob Zombie. Not too overbearing but they are great to listen to if you do running in intervals. 🙂

  • The absolute best running song I have ever heard is Midwest Choppers by Tech N9ne off his 2007 album Misery Loves Kompany.
I go full speed every time I hear that tune! Thanks.

  • lameeeeeeee

If you need music to run, you are not a serious runner.

  • lola

When I try to run to Prodigy, I almost have a heart attack. Seriously. Maybe I need to drink Red Bull or something.

  • Bubbrunner

    Come on….

    The Real Me…The Who
    Promised Land…Elvis
Me and My Uncle…The Grateful Dead

Can’t do a trail run without those three, unless you have no soul…

    Keep running.

  • “If you need music to run, you are not a serious runner.”

Wow, aren’t you judgmental ass … Sure, no one should “need” to have music to run. But as Olympian Dan Browne told Runner’s World in 2006, “music has an inherent ability to inspire and motivate, and that’s what I respond to.” So why not use it? Deena Kastor and Kara Goucher have also told Runner’s World about their music playlists, and Paula Radcliffe says she uses music in her training sometimes. I guess they all aren’t serious runners, according to you?

  • Mike

Papoose – Born to Win is an amazing track not only for running but for any sort of workout or even just when you need a little motivation to do just about anything.

  • house

    shiny toy guns- major tom
    the who-teenage wasteland

  • P3

    Hmmm…this doesn’t really cut it for me…

Lately I’ve been listening to an album called Fortress by a band called Protest the Hero while I run. It does wonders for me.

Some standout tracks from it are:

    Bloodmeat
    Bonemarrow
    Wretch
    Sequoia Throne

  • Joel Paramas

Nice list. My all time favorite running song, though, is Bleed For Me by Black Label Society. Its a bit hard, but it does have its melodic breakdowns….doable even if you aren’t into hard music. But the beat is perfect and for interval training, if you can spring the speed parts and jog the rest, then you are in damn good shape.

  • Great list, I’ve added some thanks! Here are some additional suggestions I especially like running to (not alphabetical)

“She Sells Sanctuary” by The Cult
    “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne
“My Life Would Suck W/Out You” by Kelly Clarkson
“Been Caught Stealing” by Janes Addiction
    “Dragula” by Rob Zombie
“Higher Ground” Red Hot Chili Peppers version
    “Cannonball” by The Breeders
    “Mickey” by Toni Basil
    “Ray Of Light” by Madonna
“Walking On Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves
“Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz.

  • i know better

Is this list best of the 80’s and 90’s? Get “King of the Rodeo” by K.O.L.

  • Lee-Anne

  • That’s a great mix. I usually like to pepper my running playlists with a wider variety of genres. It looks like your list would be even better with some country music in it.

Do you happen to have these in one zip file or something that you could email to me?
